Press Release

To further ensure the safety and security of our staff and community members Brevard Public Schools (BPS) is pleased to announce the addition of OpenGate® advanced weapons detection systems to all school board meetings beginning November 19, 2024. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance security across the district.

Key Points:

  • Commitment to Safety: The safety and security of our students, staff, and community remain our top priority. By introducing OpenGate® technology at school board meetings, we are taking an additional step to ensure the well-being of all those in attendance.

  • Efficient and Non-Intrusive Screening: The OpenGate® systems are designed to quickly and discreetly scan individuals for dangerous or prohibited items as they enter school board meeting spaces. This technology will maintain the flow of traffic, minimizing delays while ensuring the safety of our community members. Attendees will simply pass through the gates, with laptops or similar items removed from bags to avoid unnecessary alerts.

  • Clear Procedures for Alerts: If an alert is triggered, the individual will undergo a secondary search for further inspection.

BPS have successfully launched the installation of OpenGate® walk-through, state-of-the-art weapons detection at four of our sixteen high schools. Our 12 other high schools will follow throughout the year.

As OpenGate® technology is integrated into our school board meetings, Our District will continue to communicate transparently with parents, guardians, and the community to ensure they are fully informed about these new procedures. Our goal is to enhance safety while ensuring that meetings remain accessible, efficient, and free of disruptions.
